Is intelligence an absolute?
What is the purpose of having a university? Well Halverson and Carter gives some statement about the truth of the heart and soul of a university. Many students think that teachers know everything single detail of the University but in reality they know so much little than students. They give the statement of saying that if teachers were happy enough after many years of their study in any university and that the knowledge of the truth is limited and is mixed with errors. He goes in detail with the common ignorance with the people having problems as of knowing if we can really be certain that we have learned something and it is understood. They com up with an example with how we believe that the earth was flat and the stars revolved around it. Sometimes the information that is gained from school an be an error and no one realizes it.
Academic freedom is the opportunity to hold options based on the evidence one has to speak those options without fear of reprisal. In meaning I guess they are trying to say that academic is a free will thing either you gain it by sing the opportunities around you based with a battle of retaliation? Well I am not clearly sure what they are trying to get at but it's something I came up with. In this paragraph there are two types of conditions that are met by the community of open and intelligent individuals who recognize that the people who are able to answer questions that are being asked by the instructor and their answer might not be a hundred percent right and they are willing to get the answer wrong.
The next condition is having common purpose. Common purpose' definitions is having the same common goal a long with everyone having the same goal but receiving different tasks. This paragraph reminds me of Workshop 5 that I had attend today. I had learned the definition of the Common and used it towards the group that I was assigned with. Without a group there's no common purpose, we have to have the same goal and communicate well with each other during the activity either a group project or anything they are working on together.
Enemies of Academic freedom. I didn't think there would be such enemies but this paragraph talks about internal and external enemies. One example that they both gave out was the enemy being the one who shouts out personal opinions instead of allowing him or her to speak and one playing the enemy. But in the end Academic freedom there is no approval upon ideas and it is unsupported by evidence and it more likely that is each course there always have to have evidence.
The next article Are We Going to get smarter? I kind of like this passage because there are so much information provided by them that I can agree on. When I read the question, "Does mankind get smarter as time goes by?" I mean does mankind get smarter? In my opinion there is no such thing as getting smarter by achieving information and having experiences in practices and learning new things to achieve knowledge. With some of the statements that they had added with technology will change all of this, meaning that it was said 50 years ago children were more "smarter" than students in the 21st century now saying school has failed on them. Such as the technology calculators are invented and easy to use and depended on now not using the mental math. I can relate to this because I myself I am not like other people who will be able to do mental math it takes my brain a little longer to process. It kind of makes this article a little negative, when it is said school is a way of getting answers and not learning to get the knowledge from someone else.
I agree with them, that we do not need to be smart or take so much classes to be called smart. We can get experience and learn from it. The more we learn from practices we inquire something new then there on we pass on what we know from others so they learn. Sometimes they even call us smart but in reality it isn't like that. I was put in that situation before when I was good hands on something that I really liked to as of editing videos or being able to find resources for downloading. My friends will tell me that I am so smart that I can find all sorts of way to find them. I was feeling good about it but the truth I had practices from others and learned. That's when I pass it on to others and they them self learn and pass it on as well.
Overall, these two readings, only connected very little about academic and I was able to understand some of the points that were given. I personally like the article or passage of Schank.
