Thematic Reflection | 005
As a freshman in college, personal development is something I knew I would not be aware of. Attending school from high school to transition in college, many friends of mine have changed. Some of them are still the same, some changed for the better, or some are still in that dark whole of not knowing which path to take. During the first semester I did not find out who I was and now I still don’t know who I am either the career that I have interest in. Do I expect to change every day? No of course but I can slowly change and see things in a different point of view. Just like in ENTH 21 Professor Soriano drew a diagram of late-dualism about looking at situations on both sides. (Class Lecture, November 12). Then about dualistic students see the world in polar terms and they are to believe that all questions have right answers and all answers are right and wrong (Gordon, p. 176). I believe as students we develop a thinking of needing to find the right answers, but wrong answers can also leave a lead to find the right answers. For example, I had answered question with a wrong answer, wanting to be right, but when I had answered it my professor had told me it was a great answer that she will talk about later. I use to be afraid to answer with a wrong answer. I learned that wrong answers can be right sometimes.
Community engagement, I was never really fond of being a part of anything, but I did not know a community can be referred to as an online community such as Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. (Lecture, November 19th). For a community that I intend to build is a small school program to the younger generation of the Hmong community in Sacramento area. This is something that I had thought of when I attend the Workshop 8 for the Leadership Initiative. If now I won’t have the time yet to develop a school, I believe I am able to go to smaller locations within the area, since my interests is also based on diversity and learning my own culture. The way I will be able to build off this community is doing community service with the Hmong community that already have experience. From my own observations many of the peers around me is starting to lose their own language, just like my older sister she doesn’t really make friends within the Hmong community and she barely speaks Hmong to me. For instance if I were to answer her a question in Hmong she would answer back in English. This affects my emotional well-being because I, myself cannot have a nice and decent talk with the older generation and cannot understand them, myself. Sometimes it makes me feel sad, since now my niece and nephews some of them do not even know their own language. (Personal Reflection, November 23rd).
Another two ideas that overlap each other are communication and relationships which also goes well with self-determination. Communication, is defined in many different ways, such has having a connection to someone being able to commute with each other either with a significant other or with a friend or family member (Lecture, November 18th). Having great relationships with someone can be either good or bad. Just like learning how to Say “No” (Sears, p.33). I can relate to this very much because I am one of those people who can’t say no to others. One of my friends wanted me to join a club with her, but it was far beyond my interest, but I joined anyway with her. If I did say no then I would have found something else better to do. Leading this back to communication, there was this club that I feel apart with which was FNL. My friend who I mentioned earlier had no interest in going and I told her to not go if she didn’t want to. She got angry at me for leaving her alone. Taking this to the reading of Loneliness, (Newman, p.73). I knew for fact she was going to be lonely but I was only gone for thirty minutes, in the reading Newman says that it’s okay to be lonely because you always have your friends and family there to support you all the way through. I think sometimes people do not understand being lonely is also a great thing. If I were to be at school and finish my homework on time without any friends to keep me occupied being lonely or having time for myself is what I like best.

The four ideas that I chose is major, decision making, fixed mindset and growth mindset. Some of the reasons why I chose these ideas is because they stood out most to my understanding about the theme Navigating Institutions to Advance Agendas. Through the weeks of ENTH 21 class I began to learn more things about myself as the class goes on. What is an agenda and what is a major, and how should I choose one? How should work and career play into my college education? How should I approach the job market? These questions from the ENTH 21 website are the main topics for weeks 10 and 11 that I have been reading and researching upon myself.
Just right after finishing the application for Sacramento State, the first major I intended to choose was Filming but I chose Business since I was in a Business Academy and it was something I wanted to do or just something I got influenced to put as my major. Just right when the first semester of college is almost ending, now I am not sure if I am still interested in Business. There are so many majors in Sac State about 60 majors to choose from (Class Lecture, November 12th). I only know the big ones and not the others ones. One of the reasons why? It is because I haven’t explored them yet. From the readings of Collier and Levin, it is okay to be undeclared. Students, even myself need to explore more before I have to choose my major. I have to make the right decision for myself by participating in clubs and learning (Collier and Levin, p. 269) for myself. Also from the readings for decision making they had provided steps to learn how to make them to identify my academic goals and how I can achieve by identify the decisions to be made by having a clear understanding of what am are trying to decide when entering college. Getting to know myself, choose a major that you would like to go to grad school with, it is important to get a sense of what you are interested in, having the values, skills, and personality. Begin to identify options (career exploration) use resources and utilize them to get to know about the major. Factors influencing decisions, on education and career path that impact your ability to identify options by following through with a plan Identify my options, create options that goes towards each decision. Design a course of action to implement the decisions, be sure to have back up plans one you have narrowed your options and decided on a course of action. (Reading Blog & Marcus and McVey p. 291).
It is hard to make a decision all by myself but I know I can make better decisions as I believe what kind of career I think is best for me going through the growth and fixed mindset reading. When we were assigned to do the Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets that Shape Our Lives, reading I had learned a lot about the mindset of a person. On one of the blogs, I had wrote about me being just the growth mindset (Reading Blog, Online Session). The understanding of the fixed versus growth mindset relates to the understanding of passive and active learning and intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation because they all can be compared and contrasted with one another. Passive learning dealt with the banking system being sponges and absorbing the information, whereas extrinsic motivation you just do it because you feel like you have to gain a reward. It connects well to the fixed mindset (Partner Discussion, November 10/12). I also learned from my classmates that we can have both of the fixed and growth mindset. I thought that having just the growth mindset it the best but I now agree with them that having two that equally balanced is not so bad to get the good and the bad together for that reading for the article. (Class Discussion, November 10th).
The contemporary issues that I have chosen to reflect my values, passion, and interest because two of them Diversity and Power kind of goes with the major that I might go into, which is learning a foreign language that I learned in high school. The resources that I might tap into to explore different academic and career directions to the University’s major page and explore there and also go to the buildings on campus myself.
Task 2
Now learning about diversity and how much it is on this campus and in Sacramento I became more aware of it now along with power that entwines with it. For example learning from other cultures and the way they were raised may reflect back to how and why other ethnicity has so much hatred towards one another. The last issue that I chose was Technology but now I want to change it back to Violence. The reason why I chose to change it was because my sister had shown me a twenty minute long video about a girl surviving through domestic violence. These three issues aligns very well with my intended to change major for a foreign language. In my agenda these will reflect my daily life because minorities are around me every day whether it’s at home or outside of home. What I hope to become or do in this career is to learn as much as I can and change the younger people of what violence, power and diversity can make a difference in. I am pretty sure the best choice is to show the younger generations what life is really made out of when you enter the real world.

Task 1
The four of the ideas that is related to representation, knowledge, and power are the state of being happy, a professor’s expectation, having higher education, and student and professor relationship. If anyone has happiness internally they have the power. When I watched the documentary of Happy which connects to the power of happiness. The question that they had asked was, “What do you want to be Happy?” The film had documented the country India. Even though their country isn’t as well developed like anyone else they are still as happy like the Americans. Even if they work in the rain, their clothes are able to dry, and they work no matter how hard it is.
The man who was in the film had said, the only thing that kept him to do his work was being able to his children’s face. That’s the only thing that made him happy. As well with neighbors, they live near each other they help, support, and take care of one another (Documentary, Happy). With this part of the film, it had made me compared their life along with my culture. I remembered asking my parents if they wanted to live here in the United States or back at Thailand. They told me they would go back because things could be so much easier over there. She told me even if they were not making as much as how they are now, they seem to be happy just like any Americans. This made me think a lot to find reasons why my parents would want to go back after how long they had stayed and lived her in the United States. It also interests me to take a visit in their homeland and explore what they would be doing if they had the chance to go back.
Representation comes through everything such as dealing with professors’ expectations at the universities and having a student-professor relationship. From a professor’s view at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. He does no let students cut his classes and it is only acceptable only if it’s for illness or personal emergency. The two general reasons he pointed out were: having to appear more important than the class, or they wish to avoid they fear painful consequences. (Brown, p.92) I personally agree with his statement because for some students choose to not come to class maybe because of valuing the next class’ test or midterm a bit more important. Relating this to my older sister when she was in Junior College she had told me she skipped out on a class because she needed more time to study for her test. This is important to me because I wonder myself if I am going to do that during my years in college. Another idea is getting to your professors.
In ENTH 21, Professor Soriano had talked about how students should at least get to know their professors. (Lecture, October 29). He had shown some examples of his letter of recommendations from students. He said he can’t just write to anyone who he hasn’t even know them as much. Which this also ties in with the Gardner’s reading about getting know your professors, (Reading Blog, October 28). After I have read and did a blog about this specific area. I felt as if I didn’t do this much compared from high school. I know that I have mentioned a lot about high school, but as for now it’s the only thing that I can relate. I regret not getting to know my teachers back in those days. I was those who shut myself out and not really want to talk to them unless I really needed to. Students as they start to meet professors during their available time I know that they will learn something from them. Just like when I went after school for a letter of recommendation for my CSU application my teacher was a different person compared to regular class.
Even though there are different ways higher education is viewed from people, many always question what is higher education? There are endless debates about higher education if it is now focusing on what is the purpose of it and the other is how well colleges and universities are achieving it. Pursuing a higher education comes from schools and how they keep students on track. (Reading Blog, October 16). Prior to knowledge an example would plagiarism that we students are taught not to plagiarize when their use of other writers’ ideas constitutes plagiarism. (Williams, pg.52). Moreover this is significant towards me because, last year as a senior in high school. I have worked with the Senior Project and it was hard trying not to plagiarize and I had learned it from my English, as long as I cite I won’t be in trouble. I believe till this very day I will still use what I had learned for my future research papers or any work that deals with citing. Overall evening writing up this reflection it gathers all of what I have learned so far either in ENTH 21 or in my past lectures.
Task 2
Technology: Some of the roles that the university should play to address the problem it is probably not depending too much on technology, even though many of the students on campus do using it every other minute or so. Some of the departments that are likely to be associated with efforts to address this problem is engineering and computer science field along with, electronical & Electronical Engineering. I as a student shall attend workshops or learn about what technology is aligned with these departments and organizations. This might reflect my understandings of higher education by knowing if technology is bad if it is advancing as time goes on but I may change my issue to something in replace of Technology.
Power: I believe that power plays a very big role in the university, sometimes some people members think too highly of themselves and do not look towards what are the small problems that can make it turn bigger. The departments that will go well to learn about controlling or learning who can have power and who cannot have it is Child Development, Medical field, like going to their minds learning of how a person thinks and what the actions that they think of. For this I would say it will be the same task as what I have put for Technology.
Diversity: Universities should play address to this problem because being a minority can cause racism, as for a fact I don’t really like. Since this university itself is located at a place which has the most diverse people living and attending everywhere. University with the same purpose is the organizations, Asian Club, FCP, HUSA, Multi-Cultural Center. As for this issue I can relate a lot to it, and what I can do is learn more about other ethnic groups and create a forum from students about Diversity in this university or outside world. It reflects to my understanding of higher education because as a student anywhere we are to deal with people who we have not worked before and to learn to accept it no matter what.

Task 1
Now coming to ENTH 21 class every day, I have learned so much about me that I thought I knew already. I know that there are so many reading and details that I won’t pay much attention because of how I encountered it in high school. I know high school only made it about 30% useful when I had come to Sac State as a first year. I always felt that I was not able to be like the other students who were always asking questions and getting perfect scores. Then as I came to this university and the class that I had took, I learned to be able to know what I am capable of.
Knowledge, this word has so much power when I hear around me. I remember the first time I came across this word was in the 6th grade. I only know that it is a big word and new vocabulary. I did not consider it being something that I will be keeping with me even though I graduated from high school. Knowledge evolves because the more it becomes useful the more students are able to learn and want to suppress learning. What I found interesting about knowledge it is that it does not have to come from what I have learned in class. I can have knowledge with me or being taught to the peers around me. I can also receive the knowledge from friends and classmates (Group Discussion, October 9).
Representation is one of the biggest part that really did not imagine it to be something that I will care for. In high school I had tons of teachers who were boring and did not teach as great because of how they presented their courses. I also thought of it as of what kind of learner was I? Was I one of the ones who needed to take notes, read, listen, do things the way that I will understand it, or being in small groups? Back in my senior my business teacher had told his students to take a questionnaire to and to see what type of learner we were and as I took it. I was more of a visual leaner than the rest. Just on Tuesday evening when I read the articles and did the blog posting for ENTH 21. I decided to take that test again and I was a kinesthetic learner instead (Reading Blog, October 7).
I believe that I had grown out of being a visual learner as I stepped out of that zone to become a kinesthetic learner. I had remembered that I was shown how to use a copy machine and I just got the use to it asking my teacher every time when I needed help to fix the printer. There was a time when my teacher was absent and I could not ask the substitute to help me because she didn’t know how to use it. So what I did was I told myself I had to try it for myself and see how things went. As I did try it for myself I had to read and follow the instructions carefully to be able to do the job right. Just like in the lecture that I had the best way to be able to do a job right it is having the ability to follow directions. (Lecture, October 8). But for the real definition of kinesthetic learner for me is going out to try something for myself (Staley, pg. 1). For example if I were to have a new software in my computer I will go through the tools that are in there and mess around with it until I know how to use it. When I learn something by myself as for these type of individual activities I am able to understand it myself more.
The school system in high school compared to college is different. The power how the high school was is something that first years cling on to. Like how every time in ENTH 21 we were having a class discussion we all were so use to stare at the teacher when they lecture we tend to look at our professor. He tells us to not look at him but to the classmates that we are having a discussion. It’s becoming a habit and it was because of the school’s power had made us think that way when we enter college. We are used to learn from teachers spitting out at us and we are the sponges that are absorbing all of the information. I knew about how the banking system worked but I did not know that it will occur it in this type of source as of having to do with education. The Banking Model that is happening before we come to college and may still be happening still in college (Lecture, October 6). The power of it is so strong that students think they have to rely on the professors. I know that there isn’t just the way of relying on them but us as students can have a study group or go online for help. These three ideas are something that I will always have to put in mind since internally I think about it a lot when I am at school or at home.
Task 2:
Technology, Power, Diversity. Some of the reasons why I chose to lessen my issues is because now that I have learned what they are and how they are affecting my daily life. I am able to come across them and make use to it and be aware of them.
Technology I kept in because I am a technology freak everything I do it has something to do with it. From the 19th century in college there wasn’t technology for every one and it probably wasn’t as high tech as of today. During the 21st century technology has evolved greatly from regular iPods to fast forwarding to the next song, but now there is the iPod touch where it can fast forward with the sensibility of skin. For instance if I were to be in the bathroom or somewhere in the house my phone is with me everywhere. I depend on it a lot. If the bathroom will run out of toilet papers I will text my sisters to bring me a toilet paper rolls.
I think for the time being I want the technology to stay how it is right now in the United States. I do not want it to go any higher than it has already is with having the google car taking you to places everywhere without you having to drive it. Comparing the technology in South Korea, they have products as of the bathroom knowing how to flush it’s self in the home and it is able to have a remote where you talk to it or press the buttons for the shower to turn on. I find it kind of creepy especially if it’s somewhere where only one person is in there. But what I would want to learn more from it is how they are able to make technology so big that everyone is dependent on it. How those installments in the device does worked.
Diversity had been added to my list because am surrounded with it so much at Sac State. I know for a fact that everywhere I go in Sacramento it will always be diverse. I will get used to being around a campus or a place with diversity. There are so many people out here that you use to hate or use not be aware of but now you are aware of them.
I think most of the people who are not aware of a place that is full of diversity to be used to it. They should be able to find some programs that are in their campus to learn about why there is diversity in a certain place. If I was a person who did not know why there are so much people who isn’t my own race or ethnicity I would ask myself why is there a place like that. Something that I would like to learn more about it is probably learning to accept the people’s characteristics from how they were raised and what had started diversity?
Power is another new issue that I had recently added. I had learn from my ENTH 21 class that it has not only have to do with the power that someone holds. It can also contribute to education that deals with power. For instance power comes from school and the way how people can take something. Just like teachers having so much power in high school that many students find it hard for them to swear. It is different from college because some teachers do swear it’s not that it’s their power as a teacher but as a normal person they have the power to be able to say what they are able to say which can be limited.
Power in high schools, as of the Banking Model I want it to stop for high school kids. Since know I had learn about it and reflected it back to my school days. I felt that I could have learned more from high school than before. Maybe it was because of the courses that were being followed by the school district. I want a better education for others out there who did what I did in school. Memorize everything over and over again, then I completely forget what I just learned. But more of what I want to learn is that where do that power come from and where else can it come from besides education.
Thematic Reflection | 001
Task 1
From the very first day of ENTH 21 class I had thought it was just going to be any regular history lecture class. As the classes started to go on it wasn’t just focused on history but more on about who I can be and how I can find out who I am. I wasn’t so certain if I understood this course that I was given to take for this semester. I found it very interesting when I had read the readings that were assigned. Every time when I had read a reading it made me question myself and have observations of my characteristics that I have not noticed that I had all along that I thought I never did. The two main points that I had come across in my class are identity and culture.
I had not really thought of what is the definition of what identity was to me or how my identity was viewed as. I think it was the makers when it was introduced in the lecture. I was confused to what it had to do with identity. Identity isn’t just what I can judge from the appearance of someone but it is about the status of someone, race, ethnicity, gender, etc. It also connects to how I see myself in relation to others who is surrounding me either they are friends, family, classmates, or strangers. This is an interesting matter now because I use to not really care about other people who was different from me. (Well maybe I did notice a little but it didn’t really have a great impact on me) It’s relevant to my understanding of I who am because from the Identity Development Model (Sue and Sue, p. 196). When I read the model and the five stages of Minority Development I found myself more at the in Stage 4 when I was a junior in high school. My attitude towards the different minority group was very bitter. I was concern about myself from past experience and always judging the people who I had learned from peers to not like. For example, if one of my friends did not like a certain kind of ethnicity or person I would support the hate that adds more tension to it. Now that I have gone past that stage, I find myself at Stage 5 Interrogative Awareness. Right now that stage is very important to me, I use to always deny my identity and notice I wasn’t alone as of wanting to be from a different group (Class Discussion, September 22nd). I am very comfortable with my identity today because I surrounded myself with friends who are the same as me. I learn from them as I started to accept my identity and share it with strangers around me when they start asking questions that they are interested in. My values that I have today come from experiences from people of whom I know and from myself when I began to take notice of what my true identity is.
My culture was something that I wasn’t proud to be of when I grew up. I didn’t like that fact that I was Hmong. My parents were immigrants here and I was born here. I didn’t think a lot about my culture during my younger days in high school. I just thought it was something I had and will live forever with. It was not until one of my friends had told me so much about my culture. I appreciated her stories that she told me, since her father was a Shaman. My family never did any family gatherings at all and it was always held at my uncle’s house or relatives. I guess that was one of the ways I never learned about my culture or had considered culture having class levels. Class culture? What is that? I never heard of that at all. I didn’t even think that it was possible to think of class level ranks as a culture with low-income, working-classes/ lower middle class, professional middle-class and owning class are set as material realities. Wright want to make the invincible to become visible (Reading Blog, What Is Culture). Now I understand that knowing the class culture is very important to me. I had learned some new about students who are in EOP that they come from low-income are sitting together in a classroom and are given the same privilege to learn just like me (Lecture, September 24/25). It is something a part of me to know that I come from a low-income family and perhaps also working class.
In the end, there are more two ideas that I think I ended talking a lot about. I just am typing too much for the ideas. There’s so much to it then what I can express in this reflection. I think right now I am starting to pay more attention to my identity and culture as much as I can. I know right now that being who I am today I already can feel that I am behind as if I need to find more and new interesting ideas and concerns for myself to keep on reflecting my daily life.
Task 2
The contemporary Issue that I chose are choices that I came across to really pay attention to when I started my senior year of high school still up until now during college. Well I had just reflected back to my high school years and it’s something that is bothering me when I see it happening. The number one that I would like to see change but I know it won’t change too much in the world is Gang Violence. My sophomore year I had observed and been around gang violence and it was something that had been going on for almost three years in my school. I look at my friends who had been involved with it and seeing them get suspended and not attending school and having empty seats in the class. So what I did wanted to find out how they been involved with it was choosing to do my Senior Project about “Choosing the Wrong Friends Project.” I had learned that there are so much to it than just being in involved with violence since I was raised in a family of only girls we never came up on that, but if I were to have brothers maybe that would slightly change. I think it highly depends on being in the right crowd for younger teens.
