The five stages relationship between cultures are conformity, dissonance, resistance, and immersion, introspection, and integrative awareness. These stages help therapist with their understanding of their minority clients. Some of the beliefs are set to the options of how people view other people as the self, others of the same minority, others of another minority, and majority individuals. The first stage that he mentions about is the conformity stage to where minority individuals are seen by their dominant culture over their own.
In the passage of Who Am I? White or Black, a high student who befriended an African American student. Her parent forbid her to be friends and tells her to cut ties or else they won’t financially support her education for college. Sometimes things are always taken back as a wrong view whether it’s culture difference or the color of the skin since some countries tend to be diverse or not diverse. She met a fellow young man who she was able to get in a relationship with but her parents and his parents did not approve. But nothing can take out LOVE right? That’s what every person after a relationship talks about. Just like if they just got off from a relationship, they tell the listeners that LOVE was there and that they were blinded to see the real obstacles that they will face.
When Sue, they use quotations for such as when John had told his family that he will get in a good university and will make the best out of it. It shows clearly him wanting to make himself be seen as a regular person just like any other students who are attending there and to have the same rights that they have or the same common interest.
When he mentions about the White culture and Black culture. It reminds me so much about my own culture. My culture that is Hmong, our parents expect us to marry our own kind so the culture wouldn’t be so complicated if they were to marry. One of my sister married a Hispanic and the culture was different, one believed another and one believed this and that. It was hard to come together and agree to be on the same page. There are only little times when it’s that one perfect couple that their parents and parents are in the same boat and understand one another. But to me I have not seen that yet. Well as a result I don’t mean not to date other different race but to be careful of what the outcome may be like. Can you handle it? Can you live with it the rest of your life?
The study of racial awareness that they had found out about the majority of them choose the white doll over the black doll it is because it’s bad? No that’s not what I really think it is, which my opinion has a connection to the third option C when asked to pick the doll that looked like them of course they would pick their own color, even I would pick my own color, but I never had the thought of saying it black one is bad. I think it is just not the right way to think of those studies to be so racial.
About the part of Malcom X’s saying of himself wanting to dye his hair blond and appear as white person so he would look more attractive? I find that scandalous because the way some is with their appearance or characteristics can be changed but your skin, face, or any other appearance I think it shall not be changed. Which remind me much of an article that I have read: This Brazilian man dyed his hair and got surgery on his eyes to make his lids look like a Korean since he was abroad studying at Korea. He was inspired by the culture. He looked perfect the way he was and he changed himself to look like a Korean? Come on, don’t you think it’s too over the board? I know he loves Korean as much as I love Koreans but you have to accept the fact that you are who you are and don’t change yourself.
Well as the resistance and immersion stage comes the three active types that they both mention are guilt, shame, and anger. I have heard a lot about one culture selling out their own kind. There are times when bad things happen but I think it should get to the point where he would betray. So that is when the guilt comes from and the feeling of shame which leads to the anger of their selves and getting angered at their own kind.
Class culture? What is that? I never heard of that at all. I didn’t even think that it was possible to think of class level ranks as a culture with low-income, working-classes/ lower middle class, professional middle-class and owning class are set as material realities. Wright want to make the invincible to become visible.
Low In-Come: Poverty is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money.
Working-classes/lower middle class: Working-class is the class of people who employed for wages, in manual or industrial work. Which includes the Blue Collar and service work mostly it relies on earnings from wage labor.
Middle class is a sub-division of the middle class it refers to the middle class household who have not obtained yet the Middle Class title which they are associated with the realms of the middle class
Professional Middle-class: A little bit higher than the middle class.
Owning class: Investors and their family members with enough income from assets so that they don’t have to work to pay basic bills.
All of these terms I looked them all online, which I thought I knew the real meaning behind it but I don’t.
“Being rich means that everything works.” This quote from the reading just gets me, I don’t understand why a lot of people see it that, maybe it’s the way how one is raised just like culture you are raised to understand what it is and how it works till you are older. It makes connections with culture seeing it as someone believing it and will say that society will reason to their needs and desires.
I agree with them when they say that poor people gamble more than rich people. Why? Well because they want to gamble the money and make a bigger profit out of it than what they threw down the drain. Since it’s hard for them to make money.
Well when I finished reading these two passage. I kind of got side tracked and lost since they both throw so much information, I tend to forget what the main focus is about, just like the article Am I Black or White, I understood the situation and the culture difference. As I started to read the Class- Culture I didn’t think that they would have anything in common but now I come to realize they do have almost the same points as of viewing the living environment of culture to the comparison of class level. There is so much I can talk about but for now I think I wrote enough. Thanks for reading!!!
