High school teachers and college professors? Which ones are more different? According to Gardner there is a huge difference between them. There are some professors that love teaching what they teach. If they are so into their subject and rush on fast. It doesn’t mean that they do not care about whether or not they care about their students. Their time of teaching is limited. Just like in ENTH 14, my professor had always told the class that he can go two to three class periods just talking about a significance of the Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Asian Indians, or the Filipino immigration. I too do believe that professors are trying their best to go through their lectures and providing quizzes. Unlike high school teachers it’s a different story they are given from the admins of what to teach and how the students are going to know the knowledge that is being passed down. Connecting this with the article professors do want their teachings to be passed down because a professor was once a student as well.
Professors do a lot of readings whether it is not from any regular English class. From observing math teachers read their students work, history teachers read their students work. When they read about anything as of how to prep for class their time is very consuming being compared to their time for teaching. As college students were are expected to be in class on time and participate. Giving off an example in ENTH 14, my professor he has about 103 students and he tells us that he doesn’t have the time to get to know everyone, not that he chose not to. He did say wanted to get to know every one of his students. He said as little as it is even a small nodding in the class lectures makes a difference. They respond to their students the same way as other high school teachers. Like giving comments on essays, and telling you their positive explanations to the work.
Get to know your professors outside is even better. Go to their office and see what kind of things they put on their desk or walls. It isn’t so bad to visit them in their office hours. A lot of students who were freshman wished that they could be a little smarter. I can relate to this matter, back in high school I never wanted to talk with my teachers for help or even get to know them. I seriously regret it a lot. I would always tell my younger sister to take advantage of her teachers because she will need it.
The academic freedom is related to something called tenure. This is the award a college or university gives to professors once they reach certain point in their professional development. It promises them lifetime employment. Rank not all professor are professors. First there comes instructors and lecture, next come assistant professors followed by associate professors, full time professor most college is said that if your assistant professor can carry more weight than one from a lower ranking professor especially if the senior professor is well known in the field.
Overall reading these two articles. Professors have it hard just like any of their students. Sometimes they are forgetful since they have so many things going through their schedule. They might have meetings right after class, they keep up with meetings and such. I think my view for professors slightly changed than how I use to view them now.
