The passage that stood out to me the most is the part when Dwek talks about the outcomes of the growth mindset. When he mentions about proving over and over to be the best instead you could be proving yourself to be better. When I had read about this, it had made me reflect about the experience that I have encountered. Based on what I read the mindset that I believe I currently adopt more is growth mindset. I know as a freshman in college everything is so new and yet I am not comfortable like others around me or even my older siblings. I know I get compared a lot to my older siblings and get looked down on. I think I have not yet hit the right time to be as hardworking and probably they have not just seen it just yet. Just like the quote that Dwek quoted, “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow?” Just reading part of this quote it really makes me see the bigger picture of how the growth mindset can really be seen as. Looking back at how people around have wanted to prove themselves to be worthy for another and wanted to be known just so prove them. Why not, just try something new and that is beneficial for yourself instead of making them want to know how you are trying to be like.
The understanding of the fixed versus growth mindset relates to the understanding of passive and active learning and intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation because they all can be compared and contrasted with one another. Passive learning dealt with the banking system being sponges and absorbing the information, where as extrinsic motivation you just do it because you feel like you have to gain a reward. It connects well to the fixed mindset. In the graphing model it shows that it results in less achievement of one’s desire compared to growth mindset. The growth mindset leads to a desire to learn and a tendency to look and go through with the challenge, it links to passive learning, to learn with your passion in the interest that you are interested in. You can learn more when engaging and have your own opinion going along with having intrinsic motivation where you are here to learn because of your interest and you love doing something because it’s an internal desire to participate in the activity for your own sake.
The type of mindset that I know is necessary to formulate and advance my own agenda for my education and ultimately achieve happiness for myself is the growth mindset. As I am entering in college now I know from my past experiences from high school. I did not like the banking model I was not interested in power points and write words fill in the blanks for lectures. I did not learn anything. When tests came up it was just about memorization and to get a good grade just like active learning and being extrinsically motivated. I do not want that in college. I want to be the opposite of high school now since college in about having a higher education. Growth mindset is what I will want to go for now as a college student. Many students that I will be taking course with will not be a freshman like me they will be juniors and seniors. The way they take courses will be different and I want to meet up with their ideal knowledge. I want to go through challenges and have a great life time in college that will prepare me for the real world even though the real world will be with barriers and barriers of new encounters every day.
